The Very Tricky World of Virtualization and Software Pricing

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Your Business — admin @ 8:47 am

To provide significant TCO savings (total cost of ownership) for server and desktop hardware, as well as in desktop software and security administration, virtualization is needed. However, to save on software license prices through virtualization is not a walk in the park. According to Amy Konary, an IDC research Director, sellers, for one thing, can’t seem to settle on a model that is convenient to them as well as to the customers.

In addition, sellers are left with no choice but to let you purchase licenses for every hardware box that can perform a virtualized application, even if the software is being held as a reserve for backup purposes. On the good side of the fence, however, companies can have the chance of dispensing with site-backup server licenses for each branch. For example, if a company migrated branches to VMWare, the company could save tens of thousands of dollars each year.

Experts nod together to the fact that virtualization software pricing is as uncertain as it is on the side of the desktop. Sellers like Citrix and VMWare extended offer options such as concurrent licenses, which charges depending on how many users are online at peak times. Unfortunately, licenses like these have prices twice as much as individual ones. NoMachine, another seller, binds the cost of virtual desktop clients into the server license.

Another important issue to be tackled is the roaming rights. From his corporate desktop to any kind of computing devices he uses either at home or on the run, how many licenses does this user have to have in order to transfer his virtual client?

Thankfully, there is good news. Microsoft redeveloped its Virtual Enterprise Centralized Desktop license in order to give end users roaming rights with no limits. Plus, it comes at a slightly cheaper cost.

Geothermal Power: Clean, Environmentally Friendly Energy Today

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Lifestyle Management, Your Business — admin @ 11:38 pm

Geothermal energy comes from energy stored inside of the earth itself in order to provide clean, alternative energy without adding to climate change. It is a lot more cost effective and scalable compared to wind turbines and solar panels and is significantly safer when compared with nuclear fission. So whenever hunting for an alternate to traditional fuels, give geothermal power a chance.

Envision a future totally free of fossil energy sources, a world where we are not shackled by oil or harming our atmosphere by burning coal. With geothermal energy this vision is possible today. Geothermal energy operates by tapping into the power of the earth itself in order to produce clean, dependable energy that does not exploit natural resources and will always be around for future generations. Plus, unlike fossil fuel energy sources such as oil, natural gas, and coal, geothermal energy is, for the most part, carbon neutral. This makes it a extremely essential tool in the fight against climate change.

But how does geothermal power function and also what makes this any greater than some other types of green energy like wind farms or solar plants? Well to put it simply, the earth is hot. In addition to the energy absorbed daily by the sun, the earth’s core has ample energy left over from its formation and from the radioactive decay of elements to cover the whole human population’s energy consumption many times over. Geothermal plants, such as those in Southampton, harness this particular power by drilling deep beneath the earth’s surface and pumping water down the hole. This water is then warmed naturally and the energy is changed into electrical power. They produce serious sums of electrical energy too, with ten gigawatts created in 2007. Though this is just a small quantity of the global total, geothermal energy use is increasing every day as more and more countries switch over to environmentally friendly sources of electricity.

Unlike nuclear energy plants, geothermal wells produce no hazardous radioactive waste materials that needs to be moved and stored and it offers advantages over other non-fossil fuel sources as well. Solar panels and wind turbines, while still superb sources of renewable energy, are pricey and can’t be scaled up to the degree that geothermal plants can. Geothermal pumps can range from a small unit designed to power a single home to huge utility plants that can power an entire city. In addition it is a time tested technology that has been around for many years. In fact, the Romans even relied on geothermal wells to heat their famous baths and floors such as those found in Bath in Somerset. The ancient Chinese dynasties tapped into the power of hot springs as well and took advantage of the therapeutic properties that the heat supplied.

As you can see, geothermal energy has a lot to provide in an more and more sustainable society. It is totally green, creates very little waste, is carbon-neutral, and it is a cost effective method of generating electricity without contributing to global warming. For these reasons geothermal power is considered a serious alternative to solar, wind, nuclear, and especially fossil fuels as an energy source.

MGS Peacewalker Preview

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Better Multimedia, Web Of Hardware — admin @ 12:10 pm

Good News Everybody!

Gamespot have a got a juicy preview of Hideo Kojima’s latest Metal Gear game, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Their preview starts right at the beginning introducing Snake and his merc friends, snappily titled Militaires Sans Frontieres (that’s Soldiers without Borders to you, but I think Super Sneaky Friendship Group would be better) hard at work training in Columbia.

As you already know the meat is set in Costa Rica, so this completely un similar, non-texture saving epilogue serves as your tutorial. After a meeting with a ‘Professor of Peace Studies’ - who just happens to stumble into a mercenary training camp full of heavily armed, camoed and gravely voiced individuals, Snake or Boss or whatever, decides to take a Caribbean vacation.

Yes. So I’m being harsh. If you click through to read the rest of the article then you’ll find lots of juicy and exciting tidbits on the new teamwork mechanics, the revived comic cut scenes a la MGS Portable Ops and Human Resources and recruitment. It does look good I admit, but where is all the trademark Hideo insanity? Where’s the 60ft bipedal tanks that scream like stuck pigs and poltergeist infested amputees?

I’ll be picking this up when it comes out though. Although my slightly worn PSP might need replacing with one of those fancy Go things and some more psp accessories.

Adobe Locks Horns with Apple over iPhone Application Development

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones — admin @ 7:21 am

Industry Sources report that Adobe is considering taking its battle over iPhone application rules floated by Apple to the courts for resolution.

Apple has not approved usage of Flash on the applications being developed for the iPhone. Recently, when Adobe tried to make an indirect entry , Apple took a serious view of Adobes tactics and banned Flash from being used on any application being developed for use on its iPhone.

Upon encountering this roadblock from Apple, Adobe released its Software Creative Suite that enabled developers to use Flash to develop the application and then translate them into the code used by iPhone. This effort has also gone waste as Apple has included a new clause in its license which bars conversion of codes for iPhone and iPad applications from any other software , including Flash .

This war between the two companies is being watched by the IT industry very closely. While some side with Adobe’s viewpoint, others feel that Apple’s monopolistic ambitions may come under the watchful eyes of authorities who will bring up anti-trust issues against the company. Adobe however has not made any announcement and seems to be waiting and watching before it makes its next move.

Frustrated by How to Keep Your Family Safe and Secure against Threats?

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Living With Security — admin @ 7:48 am

Do you ever think about whether your home is completely safe or not? An adequate home protection tool should help in preventing such dangers and even contact the authorities should something happen. You need to take care in choosing the best family protection system for your requirements. There’s no special home alarm tool which is suited to every individual family. You’ll need to review your household and its unique needs, making sure you consider your funds. Are your appliances running on electricity? The risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is lower and you can take that into account when it comes to choosing an alarm system should this be the case. For older people, or those at risk, you can choose an emergency contact family protection tool which can call for the emergency services should an accident happen. If keeping an eye on those babysitters you hire is important to you then a security camera tool should be suitable. Remember to check what level of protection your home needs when purchasing a home alarm from Family Home Security monitoring system. If you need a larger degree of security than a regular surveillance system offers, then upgrading your surveillance setup to a cloaked video surveillance tool might give you the protection as criminals won’t know that it’s there. A nearly impregnable security system is attainable provided you purchase an industrial-strength security monitoring tool with fingerprint ID or iris scan technology. Don’t just think that visual surveillance is the be all and end all of a superior family safety system. It’s possible to install a lattice of movement, vibration, impact and glass smash sensors that will call help directly the moment an unauthorized entry is attempted on your house. An important complement to any alarmed security tool is a panic switch. Just triggering that button sends an alarm to help if anything terrible happens. The authorities should then be sent to help you, or the security company will get in touch with you to find out what the problem is, which depends on which options you decided on when you purchased the home alarm monitoring system.

There are many great domestic safety web logs on the Web which you can read where you can also find more information and pointers. Although it does need particular consideration, picking the right home alarm tool shouldn’t be much of a problem. This is surely something you should do if you desire protection for your home and kin and will bring you a sense of peace!

Massive Sales of Tablet PCs Predicted in 2010

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones — admin @ 6:15 am

The growing popularity of mobile computing has made smaller and lighter devices like netbooks and smartphones immensely popular among modern-day consumers. However, one device that will be lapped up by consumers in 2010 is the tablet PC, believe experts.

A tablet PC is a computer that is shaped in the form of a slate or tablet. It comprises of only the computer screen, as it neither has a keyboard nor a mouse. It operates on the touch screen technique and in terms of size, it is somewhere between netbooks and smartphones. As it is ultra-slim and light in weight, it can be carried anywhere without much difficulty.

According to analysts at Deloitte, tablet PCs will sell like hot cakes in 2010, with the total sales figure rising to millions. 2010 will be the year of the tablet PC, and Apple’s iSlate tablet PC will be in demand the most. This PC will be launched in the market this month. It is estimated that sales of this PC will reach the ten million mark every year.

Microsoft was a pioneer in developing the tablet PC. The first tablet PC was unveiled by Microsoft in 2001. Consumers were thus acquainted with this device about nine years back. However, this PC was not as technologically superior as its successors are. It had no connectivity, was less sophisticated, and its graphics and software were not as advanced and updated as those found in modern tablet PCs.

If you need more information on mobile broadband, or the mobile broadband providers, look at a dedicated website. Growing Demand for Internet Enabled Devices Will Change the Business

Filed under: Best Technology Resources, Buyers + Consumers, Cell Phones — admin @ 9:39 pm

A predicted surge in demand by the public for internet ready devices like digital cameras, camcorders, media players, and e-books will bring a massive transformation in the way business is done in this industry. Experts predict a huge increase in the number of such broadband enabled products in the next few years.

An expected 58 million mobile broadband devices will be brought into the market by 2012 end, according to analysts’ predictions. As these will also entail new partnerships in the form of tie-ups between manufacturers and internet service providers, a change is inevitable in the established business processes. Some form of regular understanding with service providers will have to be entered into.

As the device will have to be internet ready before it hits the market, these tie ups will have to be incorporated at manufacturing level itself, bringing a change in the manufacturing as well as marketing systems that are currently followed.

Senior analyst at ABI Research, Jeff Orr, said that PNDs and e-books are already very popular among customers and this increase in demand will soon spread to other products too. As this begins to happen, there will need to be simultaneously a change in business models in these manufacturing companies so that the demand can be met adequately. The system which is in place at present for bringing internet connectivity - whether short or long term - with devices like these will not be practical or financially viable for use when demand soars, ABI Research believes.

If you need more information on mobile broadband, or the mobile broadband providers, look at mobile.broadbandgenie.co.uk. I found some useful information on mobile internet pay as you go; it is worth a look at the website for and their comparative table of UK broadband providers, which includes an analysis of the products and services.
