Healthy Eating in School Canteens
Training students to switch to a healthier eating habit normally begins at home. But school canteens, which typically serve up large amounts of fat and sugar, can also be a good venue for this more nutritious alternative. This is not an easy task especially since aside from changing menus; students have to be encouraged to eat wholesome foods. However, you can be successful if you incorporate interesting methods and activities into these changes.
For example, British chef Jamie Oliver started a campaign called Feed Me Better. It focused on preparing healthy school dinners for London’s students. The campaign led the government to invest an added £280 million in order to help improve school meals across England.
Today, many British students enjoy a healthy meal of Italian chicken, or cod and salmon fishcakes supplemented with pasta Bolognese and home-baked bread.
In Australia, Griffith High School came up with The Healthy Canteen Challenge which had food technology teachers and students preparing and serving a healthy lunch for canteen managers and guests during the introduction of the Griffith canteen network. The Tasmanian School Canteen Association, Inc. also came up with a list of suggested activities like healthy eating contests, cooking classes, and healthy lunchbox ideas.
Shifting to healthier alternatives is a viable move for school canteens. Start slowly and then gradually begin to build up the students’ interest. Eventually, everybody in the canteen will go green and healthy.
