Sellafield Ltd, a company that specializes in nuclear waste management, has been fined recently after failing to comply with health and safety laws. The company was prosecuted after two of its contractors were exposed to radioactive dust while working at its nuclear- licensed plant in Cumbria on 11 July 2007.

The company was sued by HSE after a thorough investigation of the incident. The contamination occurred during the drilling and removal of a patch of concrete floor that was heavily contaminated with radiation due to a spillage that occurred a few years ago. The workers were drilling in a room that was once used to sort material contaminated with plutonium. The workers inhaled the dust produced from the drilling. The dust was laden with plutonium particles.

The flying dust activated a radioactive contamination alarm and work was stopped immediately. The PVC suit of one of the workers had a thick layer of toxic dust on it, and he inhaled some of the dust particles when he removed his respirator for undressing.

The toxic dust did not affect the health of the workers immediately, as they inhaled the dust below the statutory dose limits. However, HSE’s Superintending Nuclear Inspector Mark Bassett said in this regard that the radioactive inhalation could have been higher and it could have seriously threatened the health of the workers. According to him, proper risk assessment should have been carried out by Sellafield Ltd before entrusting the workers with the hazardous job of drilling a floor containing radioactive substance.

Bassett further said that the contractors should have been provided with pressurized suits and the company should have erected a ventilation tent to ensure their safety.

Sellafield Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and it was fined £75,000. The company was also ordered to pay costs of £26,100 at Carlisle Crown Court.
