Kona Fruit

Filed under: Fitness + Training, Health + More, Nutrition Tips — admin @ 2:12 pm

Coffee Berry is rich with phenolic acids and healing plant nutrients. These phenolic acids are rich anti-oxidants. Kona Fruit begins it?s nutrient goodness along the sides of high altitude mountain side with rich organic soil. Nourished by mineral-rich soil and warmed by intense tropical sunlight, coffee plants produce a profusion of wonderful bright red fruit, known as Kona Coffee Fruit.
Kona Coffee Berryis so exceptionally rich in anti-oxidants because it grows in high altitude, low-latitude regions where the sun?s rays are strongest. As the plants mature, they develop these powerful anti oxidants to protect them from damage caused by high doses of the sun?s radiation and the natural byproducts of photosynthesis.
You might be asking what the difference is between a Kona Fruit and a Kona Coffee Bean. Kona Coffee berries are the outer layer of the coffee fruit and are a rich source of anti oxidants. Research reports that 400 mg of concentrate has a radical scavenging activity equal to 9.6 grams of fresh blueberries, 6.2 grams of strawberries, or 4.9 grams of raspberries.
This potent anti-radical power has not been commercially available previously because the fruit rapidly perishes, which is why only the bitter seed has been commercially exploited.
“We have discovered a means of growing, harvesting and processing the whole coffee fruit so that we arrest the development of mycotoxins and thereby render the coffee fruit for human consumption.
Because no one until now has figured out how to do this in a cost effective manner, whole coffee fruit has simply not been available.”
Coffee Berry contains five of eight rare and essential sugars called monosaccharides, with research indicating that these are essential for the proper functioning of various biological systems.
Almost half of the dry weight of the concentrate is made up of polysaccharides, such as mannans and arabinoglactan. Conventional roasting destroys these nutrients, so they are not found in traditional brewed coffee.

Coffee Berry is now available in a new energy drink called XOWii Energy Drink.

Feeding Your Body

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 10:02 am

While I am not a registered dietician, I would like to just give you some general guidelines and tips to help you improve your diet. Now keep in mind that this is geared towards the average person, not the competitive bodybuilder, athlete, or any person with health problems or disease. The following will give you some easy-to-follow tips to help you get your dietary habits under control.

First of all, everyone should be eating five to six times per day. A lot of people make the mistake of eating only once or twice a day to lose weight. While you may see a dip in the scale doing so, you are probably losing muscle rather than just fat. The goal with supportive eating is to maintain your muscle while dropping your body fat. Feeding your body the calories it requires, or a slight deficit of them, will keep your metabolism high. Whereas doing the opposite, overly depleting your body of calories, will cause your metabolism to slow and your body to hold onto its body fat stores. When you don’t consume enough calories to feed your body, your body doesn’t know when to expect more, and so to keep from starving will go into a slower metabolism phase in order to preserve the body mass that it does have.

By eating five to six times a day (including snacks), your body will keep it’s metabolism at an optimum level, which equates to burning more fat by maintaining muscle. Every day should begin with a healthy breakfast; mid-morning can include a healthy snack, an example could be a few cashews coupled with an apple. Next comes a good lunch; mid-afternoon is fulfilled with a nice snack again, maybe some yogurt and a few carrots. And dinner seals the package.

Be sure and eat your dinner at a decent hour, because no matter how healthy the food is that you put into your body, if you don’t burn off the calories, your body will store them as fat. Another tip is not to exceed four hours between meals. After a few weeks of supportive, healthy eating, you may find that you are getting hungry more often. This is a good signit means that your body is burning the calories you are taking in faster than it was before.

You see, the more muscle your body has, the faster your metabolism. So optimally, you want to have as much muscle as possible, coupled with as little fat as possible. Hopefully that will make you think twice if you are a woman afraid of putting on muscle. First of all, women don’t put muscle on very easily. And when we do, it’s through hard work and dedication. Don’t worry that you will look “muscle-bound” from a moderate level of dedicated weight training. Women simply don’t have enough testosterone to put on an abundance of muscle naturally. You may be pleasantly surprised however, at the nice muscle tone you can achieve through dedicated weight training. So don’t be afraid to give it a try!

Wondering About Reiki?

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 6:39 am

Friends, colleagues and clients often ask me about Reiki (pronounced “ray-kee”), as it is gaining such popularity as an alternative medicine. According to NCCAM, (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine), Reiki is an energy medicine practice that originated in Japan. In Reiki, the practitioner places his hands on or near the person receiving treatment, with the intent to transmit ki, believed to be a life-force energy. Practitioners also believe that they can treat themselves with Reiki and send ki across short or long distances. In the United States, Reiki is part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

This article is to highlight the important points in this an from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine website, available at, http://nccam.nih.gov/health/reiki/.

The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: Rei, or universal spirit (sometimes thought of as a supreme being), and ki. Thus, the word Reiki means “universal life energy.” In CAM, Reiki belongs to a domain (area of knowledge) called energy medicine. In this domain, therapies are based on the belief that disturbances in energy cause illness. Energy medicine practitioners seek to improve the flow and balance of energy in a beneficial way.

As always, I encourage anyone who intends to utilize an alternative therapy, including Reiki, to talk to your health care provider before starting. It is still not proven how Reiki improves health or how it improves healing. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) is sponsoring studies to find out more about Reiki’s effects, how it works, and diseases and conditions for which it may be most helpful.

Reiki practitioners perform the therapy with their hands, in the hopes to reduce negative energy and to increase the ki in the client. The client is usually fully clothed and sitting or lying comfortably. The practitioner places his hands on the client’s body using several different hand positions. The positions are held as long as the practitioner feels the energy is continuing, usually two to five minutes.

Reiki is performed in offices, hospitals, clinics and private homes. The number of sessions is determined by both the practitioner and the client and generally at least four sessions are scheduled, at 30 to 90 minutes each.

Why people seek Reiki

People seek Reiki treatment for several health-related reasons. According to NCCAM, some of these reasons include:

• Effects of stress.

• Chronic pain.

• Recovery from surgery and anesthesia.

• Side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer.

• Lowering heart rate.

• Improving immunity.

• Mental clarity.

• Sense of well-being and/or spirituality.

• Enhancing the sense of peace in people who are dying.

There tends to be a relaxed sensation after a Reiki session. That alone may be beneficial in combating certain health issues, such as pain, stress, and fatigue. Clients may also feel a warmth, tingling, sleepiness as well. Reiki appears to be safe with no serious side effects being reported.

Occasionally a person can experience symptoms of weakness, tiredness, headache or stomach ache, after a session. Practitioners believe these are effects of the releasing of toxins from the body, and advise rest and drink plenty of water as a way to deal with these symptoms.

Consider these points about using Reiki therapy:

• Do not use Reiki as a replacement for conventional care or to delay the time it takes you to see a doctor about a medical problem.

• Discuss any CAM therapies you are considering or using with your health care provider.

• Ask the Reiki practitioner about his training and experience (see also the NCCAM publication “Selecting a CAM Practitioner”).

• Reiki has not been well studied scientifically, but you can find and read research studies published on its use for various health conditions (see “for more information” below).

One does not need a special background to receive Reiki training, though many who seek training are health care professionals. Reiki can not be self-taught, and must be learned from an experienced teacher or Master. There are several schools of Reiki and there are usually three or four levels of expertise, depending upon the school. Laws regulating the practice of Reiki vary from state to state. In Florida, for example, one must be a certified massage therapist in order to become a Reiki practitioner.

Areas of controversy in Reiki:

• Since little is known scientifically about Reiki, accepting its teachings about its healing properties and about ki is a matter of faith.

• Some people believe that effects attributed to Reiki occur for psychological reasons (such as the placebo effect or suggestibility), or that there are no true effects.

• Some people feel Reiki is incompatible with their religious or spiritual beliefs.

• Government licensing and regulation of Reiki practice is a controversial area.

Reiki can be a great tool to help people in pain or who prefer a more spiritual form of relaxation. Reiki is just one of the many ways to accomplish this, and because many people may have heard about it, still many don’t know what it is. This article should help fill in any blanks you may have had. I would suggest you find a practitioner in your area and give it a try if it sounds interesting to you.

For more information, visit the website for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, here at, http://nccam.nih.gov/health/reiki/. Finally, always, always consult your health care practitioner before beginning any alternative therapies.

Berry Good!

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 5:18 am

Long before winter comes, black bears in the forest spend all their time eating everything they can sink their teeth into.

During the summer, bears eat and eat and eat, trying to get as fat as they possibly can, and when the weather turns cold, they look for a place to curl up and then they sleep the winter away.

Now, the habits of bears might not seem like something you should try to follow. After all, doctors are always warning us humans that we shouldn’t overeat, and that we shouldn’t spend all of our time lying around, doing nothing.

But there is one part of the black bear’s habits that you should actually try to imitate, because it would be good for your health.

Black bears eat a lot of berries, of many different varieties, such as raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries.

Berries contain natural sugars and wonderful flavors. Unlike many other foods that are really good for you, but which don’t taste good, berries taste great.

And unlike many foods that taste great but which aren’t good for you, berries are among the most health friendly foods you can eat.

It’s only been within the last decade that scientists have started to pay a lot of attention to the health benefits of berries. And what researchers are learning about the health benefits of berries has a lot of exciting potential for human diets.

One of the first major experiments on the health benefits of berries took place at Tufts University about ten years ago.

Researchers were working with a group of aging rats. They fed them diets of various foods to see what the effects would be. Among the foods they tested were strawberries, blueberries, and spinach.

Now these rats were fairly old in terms of “rat years”. In fact, their age was equivalent to humans about 70 years old.

The foods the scientists tested were all very high in beneficial antioxidants, so the scientists wanted to see if any of these foods would boost the physical and mental capabilities of these aging rats.

The researchers found that while several of these foods seemed to offer some antioxidant protection, the rats that had been fed blueberries were the only ones that actually improved in their abilities.

In fact, the rats which had been fed blueberries were able to perform like much younger rats!

This was a very exciting find, and the scientists then wanted to find what it was in the blueberries that produced this very beneficial effect.

It turns out that the chemicals responsible for making these aging rats act mentally younger and perkier were the pigments in the skin of the blueberries.

The compounds that give ripe berries their beautiful colors are the very substances that have such strong anti-oxidant powers. And antioxidants are compounds that help repair some of the damage that happens to our body cells every day.

Scientists have discovered that the darker the berry, the more health benefits it has! Eating two thirds of a cup of blueberries will give you as much anti-oxidant protection as five servings of apples or squash.

The dark pigments in these berries seem to offer protection against cardiovascular disease, degenerative eye disease such as cataracts, and may offer some help in preventing some cancers, and bladder infections.

If the exciting results of the rat studies turn out to also hold true for humans, it may mean that compounds in these dark berries may help protect brain cells from the degenerative diseases of aging.

You can get this fantastic antioxidant protection whether you eat your berries fresh, frozen, or dried.

You can eat berries raw, add them to your favorite cereals, or make a smoothie drink with various berries, fruits, milk and yoghurt. Get creative and find ways to mix berries into your favorite recipes.

In North America, blueberries are available fresh or frozen year round. If you can’t get fresh berries, dried berries are also filled with very concentrated levels of the valuable antioxidants.

If you live in a place where blueberries are not easily available, look for other fruits and berries that have very dark red or dark purple colors.

Foods such as pomegranates, bilberries, cherries, black raspberries, saskatoons or serviceberries also have high levels of these very beneficial dark pigments. These foods offer benefits similar to the benefits of blueberries.

So, think about incorporating at least one habit of bears into your lifestyle - and make berries a frequent part of your diet!

Personal Wellness Program

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 6:19 am

Having a personal wellness program has become a concern for more and more people. The problem is many people do not know where to begin a wellness program. Here are a few keys to maintaining a personal wellness program:

Know and understand your current health situation. Do you have a proper assessment of your current state of health? Do you have a bad cholesterol problem? Or maybe you have good cholesterol? Do you gain weight easily? Or do you have a hard time keeping weight on? Has your overall health been getting worse, stayed the same or has it been getting better?

Taking time out for yourself is important to your (and your family’s) well being. Do you take out personal time for yourself everyday? If you fail to support your personal wellness program with alone time you may experience burnout. Burnout can affect your personal wellness and that of your family. The results of this can have a lasting residual effect on your families’ health and wellness.

Getting proper rest and sleep should be a part of your personal wellness program. Do you know how many hours of sleep you need a night? Can your body function on four hours of sleep a night? Or maybe you need eight hours? Make sure you’re getting the proper amount for your personal wellness. Not having enough rest can make you susceptible to illness, irritability and lack of concentration. There are many more problems that can arise if you neglect sleep.

Managing stress affectively in your life will help you maintain your personal wellness program. Do you know what stresses you out? How can you avoid that stress? If you can’t avoid certain stresses how can you better cope with stress? Find healthy ways to channel your stress so you don’t internalize it. Internalizing stress is what affects your health negatively.

Getting proper exercise is a big part of your personal wellness program. What kind of exercise and fitness do you currently get on a weekly basis? Did you know walking just 10 minutes a day is beneficial for your health? You don’t have to spend hours in the gym a day. You can ride a bike, walk a round of golf, walk the dogs around the block and you can even go to the gym. The key is making exercise a regular part of your personal wellness program. You will feel better and stronger, reduce stress and function at a higher level of energy.

Supporting your body with proper foods and nutritional supplementation are essentials to your personal wellness program. What kinds of foods do you eat on a daily basis? Stay away from fried foods, sweets, sodium and salts, fatty foods and empty carbs. Empty carbs are foods like white potatoes, white rolls and bread, cookies and cakes and foods that lack density and fiber. Support your diet with dense carbs like peanuts or almonds, corn tortillas and green vegetables. Another important aspect of making sure your body gets all the nutrients it needs is finding good nutritional supplements. Unfortunately eating a good balanced diet in this day and age does not get your body all the nutrients that it needs. Do your research and find out about supplements that will increase your optimal health and fit your personal wellness program.

Fish Oil — Possible Benefits and Possible Consequences

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 3:44 am

Fish oil seems to be the new castor oil - a relative cure-all. But do you need to take it? Why should you take it? First and foremost, realize that for the most part it is better to get the nutrients that you need by eating a healthy and well-rounded diet. It is better to eat fish than to take a fish oil supplement.

Of course, this is not always completely reasonable - you may not want to eat fish every single day. Another thing to consider is the fact that some fish may contain mercury, and this is not good for humans, especially pregnant women. Also, realize that fattier fishes like salmon have a higher percentage of omega-3 fatty acids than other fish, like canned tuna.

That being said, let’s find out why other people take fish oil:

Fish oil is full of omega-3 fatty acids. Yes, the word “fatty” may throw you off, but omega-3 fatty acids are actually very good for your heart. That is why many people take fish oil as a preventative measure against heart disease. People who have a history of heart attacks in their family are likely to want to take fish oil as a supplement.

In fact, fish oil is a great supplement for anyone who already has coronary artery disease (even those who have not yet had a heart attack).

People who have auto-immune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis should also consider taking a fish oil supplement on days that they do not eat fish. About 3 grams of omega-3s a day are recommended. Clinical studies suggest that fish oil can help with joint pain and swelling of rheumatoid arthritis. Omega-3s can suppress the immune response.

People who have high triglycerides may also benefit from fish oil, as well.

Other, possible benefits of fish oil supplements (not all of these are accepted benefits by the medical society at large):

It can improve lupus symptoms.

Fish oil cuts the risk of sudden death.

Used during pregnancy, it can prevent diabetes.

It could reduce stroke.

Lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the body.

Increases the good (HDL) cholesterol.

Again, you are much likely to get a dose of mercury from taking a fish oil supplement than from eating fish.

Helps in the treatment of depression.

Can help eczema.

It aids in infant brain and vision development.

Beneficial to dyspraxic children.

Helps prevent cancer.

Improves language and learning skills for autistic children.

Some even say that it can reverse the brain damage caused by crystal meth.

Again, realize that not all of the above-mentioned possible benefits are necessarily true. More studies must be conducted.

There are, of course, negatives associated with fish oil. In other words, just because fish oil may seem like a panacea, it does not mean that you should take it. Most definitely consult with your physician before you take fish oil or any other supplement that you have questions about.

Some possible negatives of fish oil supplements include:

People with diabetes could experience an increase in glucose levels when they take large doses of fish oil (a large dose is generally 3 grams or more a day).

Large doses can also cause nausea, belching (and a horrible taste in the mouth as well as bad breath), and diarrhea.

A very large dose could actually suppress the immune system - people with weakened immune systems should consult a doctor before trying out fish oil.

Fish oil causes a decreased ability for blood to clot - while this helps prevent heart attacks, it is a negative thing for people with bleeding disorders, hypertension, etc.

I mentioned it before, and I will mention it again: be sure to consult your doctor before you take fish oil. It is readily available and relatively safe, but for some people, the possible consequences may outweigh the possible benefits.

The Benefits Of Taking A Vitamin Supplement

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 2:14 am

Vitamin supplements seem to the new hot item discussed on the Internet, in newspapers and magazines, sometimes even on the evening news. There’s a good reason for the growing popularity of vitamins, minerals and supplements and that’s the simple fact that our bodies need quality nutrition in order to function properly.

There are a large number of essential vitamins and minerals that our body needs to routinely make it through the day and with our daily food intake not adding up into a balanced diet the need for a vitamin supplement has never been greater. Vitamin supplements are responsible for making sure they fill the gaps created by our improper diets in order to prevent a deficiency from taking place with the essential vitamins and minerals we need. Although there are plenty of ways to research vitamin supplements online the best advice can be gained from the advice given by a trained health professional or even better a dietary technician. Expert advice can be very important to your health because although vitamin supplements do help our bodies they can also harm you (in some cases they can be toxic) if taken in large dosages. Additionally a dietary specialist can determine the types of minerals and nutrients you need by analyzing your diet and then accurately prescribe a vitamin supplement to meet your deficiencies in the correct dosages.

The benefit of seeking expert advice and dietary opinions is magnified if you fall into a specific category of health or follow a specific diet such as a vegetarian. The reality is no matter how good a vegetarian diet is for your health and weight it leaves your body deficient in a number of essential vitamins that are normally only found in meat type products. For that very reason a good vitamin supplement is needed in order to properly address the nutrient deficiency based on only eating vegetables. Vegetarians also don’t need to be worried about ingesting any animal type products with their supplements since there are synthetic versions available that allow vegetarians the opportunity to get the minerals and nutrients they need without compromising their dietary beliefs.

As you can probably imagine the older we get the more we rely on vitamins and nutrients in order to help us make it through the day. Unfortunately our bodies lose the ability to effectively draw the nutrients we need from our daily dietary allowance. We don’t completely lose the ability there is just a degradation in the efficiency process of extracting nutrients from the food we it. A vitamin supplement is a natural fit here in order to help us process our food more better and to again fill in the vitamin deficiency we may be experiencing.

Finally, although children naturally have a better system for drawing nutrients out of the food they eat the problem with their vitamin deficiency lies in the actual diet they consume. Let’s face it; children don’t eat a sufficient amount of foods in a wide variety so a vitamin supplement would help to augment their development until such time as they start eating more foods with a better source of nutrients and minerals.

Your health is important and in order to optimize our bodies so they can properly react to the stress involved in the activities know as daily living we need the proper nutrition, vitamins and minerals in the correct amounts. Vitamin supplements are an effective way to accomplish this quickly and easily.

Ways to Maximize Vitamin Absorption

Filed under: Nutrition Tips — admin @ 12:52 pm

1. Do not refrigerate vegetables and fruits (raw and uncut) for more than two days.

2. Do not go by the advertisements that show refrigeration slowing down loss of nutrients from fruit. It can’t stop the process altogether and fruits certainly do not get any fresher by refrigerating them for a long time.

3. Eat your fruits whole rather than cutting them into pieces. When exposed to air (oxygen), vital vitamins are lost. By that logic, raw fruits are better than fruit juices and pies.

4. Take a sunbath around nine am for 15-20 minutes and you do not need to pop any vitamin D supplements, except if otherwise advised by a medical practitioner.

5. Give full attention to food while eating rather than sharing the meal with your favorite soap on TV, so that your parasympathetic nervous system is dominant and the digestive system works to its optimum level.
